This color lithograph was made from a commissioned painting of Ne-O-Mon-Ne, an Ioway (Iowa) chief from what is now the state of Iowa and parts of surrounding states. He is wearing a portrait medallion around his neck and holding a calumet (peace pipe).This chief's name translates to"The cloud out of which the rain comes." The color lithograph was first published ca. 1837.
