This group of six men and boys are playing cards outside a log and tent shelter at camp during the winter of 1862 during the American Civil War. Many young boys served as drummer boys in both armies. The drummer boys could be as young as 12, and some were rumored to be younger than that. They marched into combat with the men, playing their drums to provide rhythm for the march and the charge.
