This lithograph portrays the bloody Third Battle of Petersburg, fought on April 2, 1865, near Petersburg, Virginia. This battle was near the end of the Siege of Petersburg, the beginning of the Appomattox Campaign, and, unknown at this time, near the end of the American Civil War. In this face-off of the Union Army under Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate Army under Gen. Robert E. Lee, over 10,000 Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, taken prisoner, or gone missing.
