Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893) was in command of the Confederate forces in Charleston, South Carolina, that opened the Civil War by firing on and forcing the abandonment of Fort Sumter. He commanded the Confederate forces at 1st Manassas. He also commanded the Confederate Army opposing Sherman's march through the Carolinas until replaced by Joseph Johnston. Photographed ca. 1863.
