Limestone-laden spring water flowed continuously over the formations of Minerva Terrace, coating everything it touched, including bottles and other items placed on "coating racks" by enterprising park souvenir peddlers. Some coating racks were left and remain forever embedded in the travertine terraces. Photographed in 1882 by F. Jay Haynes.
