The original painting was created by artist Archibald M. Willard (1836-1918), titled "Spirit of '76." It shows three patriots from the Revolutionary War--a young boy, a much older man, and a middle-aged man--playing drums and a fife amidst the turmoil of war and while leading troops into battle. The lithograph version of the painting was published in Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1876.
