The Civil War Battle of the Wilderness took place in and around Spotsylvania, Virginia, on May 5 to 7, 1864. It was the first battle of Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Virginia Overland Campaign, waged against Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The scene here was of the desperate fight on May 6 on the Orange C.H. Plank Road, near Todd's Tavern. This color lithograph was created ca. 1887.
