The sons of a fisherman, these two young boys were playing hooky on "their father's smacks" in Boston, Massachusetts. A "fishing smack" was a traditional fishing boat used in the 1800s and early 1900s. It had a well amidship in which local water was kept. Caught fish were thrown in the well to keep them alive and fresh until docking, upon which time they were sold. This photo was a Boston 1915 Exhibit photo, taken by Lewis Wickes Hine in October 1909.
