The Sombrero Galaxy (scientifically known as Messier 104 (M104) was nicknamed such because of the large bulge in the center and the darker dust lane, resembling the rim and high top of a Mexican hat. The Sombrero Galaxy is is an unbarred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo, about 31 million light-years from Earth. This galaxy is about one-third the size of the Milky Way. It has a bright nucleus, a large central bulge. and a pronounced dust lane.
