Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) entered West Point at his father's wish and graduated at the bottom of his class. He was to become the Civil War's best-known Union general and in March 1864, Grant was made general-in-chief of the armies of the United States. He was heralded at the war's end as "the hero of Appomattox" for forcing the Confederate Army to surrender. He later served two terms as the 18th president of the United States. This photograph was taken by Mathew B. Brady in 1863, after the fall of Vicksburg.
