This beautiful portrayal of the "Valley of the Yosemite" was painted by American painter Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) in 1864. It is a very peaceful scene, with deer gathered along the water in the valley. Bierstadt painted this small landscape in his New York studio the year after his trip to Yosemite (California). He sold it at the Metropolitan Sanitary Fair in New York for $1,600, the highest price paid for a painting at the sale.
