This young man was photographed aboard the USS New Hampshire. "Powder monkey" was the name given to the young boy who would be responsible for bringing the gunpowder up from the ship's magazine to the gun positions. Carrying powder for the big guns through the drifting smoke and cannon fire could, at any moment, bring death to these young boys, some as young as 10 or 12.
