Note the trolleys in this 1912 New York City scene. They were a huge improvement over their predecessors. In the 1830s, New York City transportation introduced a small, boxy car pulled by horses over rails embedded into the street. This horsecar was the first trolley. Then came cable cars. Later, electric generator and motor technology made it possible for the more modern trolleys.
