The first recorded sighting of the crater of this geyser (no longer active) was written up in 1869, although the viewers did not know they had discovered the world's largest geyser. At its peak in 1881-1890, the Excelsior spat boiling water and rocks to the height of a 30-story building and to the width of a football field. Photographed in 1888 by F. Jay Haynes.
