George Washington stands with (from left to right) European volunteer officers Johann de Kalb, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, Kazimierz Pulaski, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Gilbert du Motier and others. Washington was one of the few American officers at that time whose wealth and sophistication led him comfortably into such circles. The officers confer as Washington's men, holding the flag of the revolution, stand opposite. The Illustration was created by Frederick Girsch.
