Pictured are members of the 10th Cavalry escort to General Merritt's party, in camp at St. Mary, Montana. The emblem of the 10th Cavalry, a contingent of all-black troopers or "buffalo soldiers," included a figure of a buffalo, a war bonnet, and crossed tomahawks. Photographed in 1894 by A. B. Coe.
