Bessie Big Beaver is holding her schoolmate's baby. The baby was named after Bessie. Little Bessie is in a cradleboard. Cradleboards were often carried or tied to the mother's back. They were also hung from the poles on the inside of a tipi or from the saddle horn during travel. Photographed ca. 1920 by Fannie Stohr.
