Barred galaxies are relatively young. Due to information from the Hubbel Space Telescope, astronomers are able to say with some certainty that there weren't nearly as many barred spiral galaxies around 7 billion years ago as there are today! The ribbon of stars, or bar, crossing this galaxy is a sign that it has reached relative maturity.
