This photo shows Professor Thaddeus S. Lowe (1832-1913) observing the battle from his balloon called the "Intrepid." Soldiers hold the balloon's ropes at their camp in Fair Oaks, Virginia. Lowe was a Civil War aeronaut, scientist, and inventor. He became known as the father of military aerial reconnaissance. He was enlisted by the Union Army to conduct surveillance of the Confederate Army. President Lincoln appointed him Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Balloon Corps in 1861.
