President Lincoln is shown meeting with Alan Pinkerton, head of Gen. McClellan's secret service, and Maj. Gen. J. A. McClernand, a Union general in the American Civil War. Pinkerton, loyal to McClellan, refused to continue his role with the Army of the Potomac after McClellan was dismissed for refusing to follow the president's orders. This photograph was taken at Antietam, Maryland, on October 8, 1862.
