The spectacular eruption of the park's most famous geyser, Old Faithful, has always thrilled Yellowstone visitors. The geyser was named for its consistency of eruption by members of the Washburn Expedition in 1870. Its pattern of eruption is as predictable now as it was a century ago. Photographed in 1884 by F. Jay Haynes.
