This photo shows the towering travertine rock called Liberty Cap, located in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park. It rises about 45 feet. The cone formed over time as a flow of hot water deposited thick layers of travertine, or limestone. The spring is now inactive. Liberty Cap was given its name by members of the 1871 Hayden Expedition, who thought it looked like the caps worn by the colonials in the Revolutionary War. This stereograph was taken ca. 1903.
