This stereograph shows Union soldiers standing on a railway car around the 13-inch mortar called "Dictator." This mortar-car was on Gen. Grant's Military Railroad at Petersburg, Virginia. The car was moved up and down the line, with the mortar at ready for firing when needed. Photographed September 1, 1864.
