The squash-blossom hairstyle of these young Hopi women indicates they are unmarried but of marriageable age. To form these butterfly whorls over each ear, the hair is parted, then wound in a figure-eight pattern around a frame of bent willow. They are kneeling as they grind corn into meal. Photographed in 1906 by Edward S. Curtis.
