Portrayed in this painting is the surrender of British General John Burgoyne to General Horatio Gates at Saratoga, New York, on October 17, 1777. This event was the turning point in the American Revolution and prevented the British from separating New England from the other colonies. Artist Percy Moran created this work ca. 1911.
