Maj.-Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) devised a new military tactic, disrupting civilian populations and their ability to support the war. A telegram to Pres. Lincoln on Dec. 21, 1864, offered Savannah, Georgia, as a Christmas present following its capture during his famous March to the Sea. Photographed ca. 1865.
