Women have been playing baseball for a long time. Baseball was popular at women's colleges as early as the mid-1800s, such as Vassar, Smith, Wellesley, and Mount Holyoke. The Philadelphia Dolly Vardens, an African American women's team, started playing in 1867. This studio portrait features a woman posed in pitcher stance, wearing a baseball uniform. The photograph was taken May 14, 1913.
