This chromolithograph shows George Washington welcoming the Marquis de Lafayette to his home, Mount Vernon, in 1777. Martha Washington and others are behind and to Washington's right. The young Frenchman was only 19 at the time. Lafayette was appointed by the Continental Congress to be a volunteer Major General in the Continental Army. He was assigned to join Washington's staff. Published ca. 1875.
