This painting was made to symbolize the Highland Clearances, a time in Scottish history when many Scots were made to emigrate, driven from their homes by poverty or evicted by greedy estate owners. The Highland Clearances went on during the 18th and 19th centuries. This scene was painted by UK artist Thomas Faed (1826-1900). The original hangs in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland.
