Several well-dressed suffragettes--wearing banners across their chests that read "American Suffragettes"--were photographed as they left City Hall in New York. They are following a pair of city policemen or are being led away by them. Although public opinion was firmly against suffragettes at this time, all is peaceful and the women are smiling. Photographed by Bain News Service on October 10, 1908. (Women did not get the vote until 1919, ratified in 1920.)
