Red Cloud was a famed war chief of the Iteshica (or "Bad Faces") band of Oglala Sioux. He fought fiercely in the 1860s, determined to retain rights to the hunting lands along the Powder River (Wyoming). Later, he turned from fighting to negotiation, fearing further war would mean extinction. Photographed ca. 1905 by David F. Barry.
