This Mojave woman, photographed on the bank of the Colorado River, carries her water jar (olla) on her head. This freed her hands for other tasks such as carrying her child. The pot is balanced on a pot ring, a cloth-covered circlet of willow or yucca twigs. Photographed in 1903 by Edward S. Curtis.
