It is not surprising that George Washington was in church on Easter Sunday, 1795. The date would have been April 5, during the sixth year of his presidency (1789-1797). This 1908 painting by J. L. G. Ferris portrays the president standing beside his coach as Christ Church (Philadelphia) let out. His wife Martha on his arm, he raises his tricorn hat as others hail him with theirs.
