After several years of design and construction, the El Tovar Hotel opened to Grand Canyon National Park visitors in 1905. This elegant hotel has welcomed many well-known personages over the years, beginning with the 26th US president, Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt stayed at El Tovar in 1906 and again in 1913. In 1974, El Tovar became a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.
