When a star dies, it explodes across the sky in an expanding wave of gas and dust known as a supernova nebula. The Crab Nebula is the most famous of all supernova remnants. It lives in the constellation of Taurus. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years and is 6,523 light years away from Earth. The filaments in this nebula are known to be filled with hot gasses, but little else is known. At the center is a pulsar, a rotating neutron star.
