Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the world. It was designated as such in 1872, by order of President Ulysses S. Grant. The park takes its name from the Yellowstone River, which flows through the park, in and out of Yellowstone Lake, and cascades down 422 feet of Yellowstone's Grand Canyon. It runs out of the park in Gardiner, Montana, and eventually runs into the Missouri River in North Dakota.
