This photograph of Coyetenna, a young Apache woman, was taken in the commercial fashion of the day. Photographers typically went to the field to meet subjects, set up a backdrop, and arranged props. Coyetenna is dressed in fine clothing. The shoe tabs on Coyetenna's moccasins were worn on special occasions; they were purely decorative and served no practical purpose.
