Dorothy Strait, a Cherokee artist, lived most of her life in Arizona. Her canvases portray her native people’s legends, ceremonies, and lifestyle in vivid color. Of this painting, she said, "The dancers are Cherokee. They try to keep in step with the drum beats. They make their own costumes to enter into dance competitions. Each one tries to make his costume the most outstanding so he will have the best chance at winning the competitions."
