Dorothy Strait, Cherokee, lived most of her life in Arizona. Her canvases portray her native people’s legends, ceremonies, and lifestyle in vivid color. She said of this painting, “The three figures represent three sisters of different ages. I tried to capture the innocence of the youngest, the transition of the middle sister, and the maturity of the older. Ms. Chief’s daughters are wearing robes with the old Cherokee designs on them. The sisters are named Tsv-ti, Do-quo-ti, and He-le-ni.” Acrylics, 1990
