This painting symbolizes the Apache Sunrise Ceremony, a rite of passage then and now for Apache girls at age 12. This four-day ceremony celebrates a young woman's rite of passage on their way to becoming women. In the early 1900s, the US government banned the ceremony along with other Native American spiritual practices. It became legal again with the 1978 American Indian Religious Freedom Act. It was painted by Apache artist Duke W. Sine, a prolific painter from Arizona.
