Many Whiskers was photographed wearing a blanket, bead necklaces, a squash blossom necklace, and a cloth headband. He was a Navajo tribal councilman from Shiprock, a small town in northwestern New Mexico named for the 1800-foot geologic feature that looms over the desert there.
