Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was a career US Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. He was.also known as "Little Phil" and "Fightin' Phil." He rose in rank quickly and was appointed by Gen.-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. His men were instrumental in forcing the surrender at Appomattox.
