This is an early photograph of Jesse Woodson James (1847-1882), taken during the Civil War. He is best known as an outlaw, guerrilla, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the "Little Dixie" area of western Missouri. Jesse James joined with his brother Frank in 1865 to form their outlaw band. At age 34, James was shot from behind and killed by Robert Ford.
