Rain-in-the-Face was one of the most feared and respected American Indian warriors of the late 19th century. Rain-in-the-Face, a Hunkpapa Sioux, is believed to be the man who killed Lt. Col. Custer in the battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer's wife attributed her husband's death to him and Longfellow wrote of him in his poem, "Revenge of Rain-in-the-Face.
