William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody gave the Wild West its name as his show, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, gained popularity across the country and then in Europe. His show ran an enjoyable four hours from 1883 to 1913. It starred such personages as Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, and the Sioux leader, Sitting Bull. This poster, featuring Buffalo Bill's head and shoulders on a stampeding buffalo, was printed to celebrate the return of his show from an 1889 French theatrical tour. This lithograph was printed ca. 1900.
